Dumbbell Lateral Raise

The dumbbell lateral raise is an isolation exercise that targets the lateral deltoid, or side shoulder muscle. It is performed by raising the arms out to the sides to shoulder height, then lowering them back down under control.

Position

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell in each hand by your sides with your palms facing in.

Movement

  • Raise the dumbbells out to the sides until they are at shoulder height, then lower them back down under control.
  • Keep your core engaged and your back straight throughout the movement.

Breathing

Inhale as you raise the dumbbells and exhale as you lower them back down.

  • Focus on using your shoulder muscles to lift the weights, rather than relying on momentum or other muscles for assistance.
  • Avoid swinging the weights or using excessive momentum to lift them, as this can reduce the effectiveness of the exercise.
